The University of Oklahoma (OU) is now part of the Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium, a new initiative led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology under the U.S. Department of Commerce.

This collaboration aims to unify AI developers, users, and researchers globally to foster the development of reliable and secure AI technologies.

Tomas Diaz de la Rubia, OU's Vice President for Research and Partnerships, highlighted OU's significant role in pioneering trustworthy AI, particularly in weather research.

"Our participation in the consortium aligns with OU's commitment to advancing AI that is safe and beneficial for society," he said.

OU's Data Institute for Societal Challenges and the NSF AI Institute for Research on Trustworthy AI in Weather, Climate, and Coastal Oceanography (AI2ES) are central to this effort.

AI2ES, led by Amy McGovern, focuses on crafting dependable AI solutions for critical weather conditions, aiming to protect communities and improve weather predictions.

This endeavor supports the consortium's goal of developing AI technologies that society can trust.

Furthermore, David Ebert, director of OU's Data Institute for Societal Challenges, emphasized the institute's role in tackling the multifaceted challenges of AI to ensure positive national and global outcomes.

The collaboration with the consortium and NIST will guide the creation of industry standards for AI's ethical development and application.

Notably, the consortium, established in response to the Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence, seeks to drive innovation and promote responsible AI practices.

It covers a broad range of expertise, including human-AI interaction, AI governance, and system design, aiming to align AI advancements with societal norms and values.

Conclusion

OU's involvement in the Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium marks a strategic step towards enhancing the safety, fairness, and trustworthiness of AI technologies.

By leveraging its research strengths and collaborating with national partners, OU aims to make contributions to the ethical development and deployment of AI.
