The official launch of ‘Wi-Fi Certified 6’ program was announced on Monday by the Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA). This opened the gate for Open Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and vendors to advertise their laptops, smartphones, routers and other client-side devices with the new standard. According to the IEEE 802.1 lax standard, the brand-new technology provides efficiency, coverage, capacity and performance required by the devices, services and platforms.

In an official press release, WFA said that Wi-Fi Certified 6 networks guarantee each connected device performs in the best way possible. According to the WFA, “Wi-Fi Certified 6 devices meet the highest standards for security and interoperability, and enable lower battery consumption, making it a solid choice for any environment, including the Internet of Things (IoT)”.

Wi-Fi Certified 6 technology has many advantages which makes it a good choice for Internet of Thing (IoT) devices. It is equipped with features like increased capacity, lower latency, higher data rates, improved efficiency and sustained performance with numerous connected devices. “Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6 provides the foundation for a host of current and emerging uses from streaming ultra-high-definition movies, to mission-critical business applications requiring high bandwidth and low latency, to staying connected and productive while traversing large, congested networks in airports and train stations”, said WFA.

The latest smartphones from brands like Apple and Samsung are compatible with Wi-Fi 6. Recently released iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max along with Samsung Galaxy Note 10 are compatible with Wi-Fi 6. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 has been certified as the first smartphone compatible with Wi-Fi 6 by WFA.

Improved performance of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in fields of e-Learning, telepresence and healthcare, is expected with the use of Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 6 will also help to provide more capabilities to support advanced connectivity in stadiums, retail and transportation hubs.
