Where there is the internet accessibility, there is a chance of having a security breach. This has created a need for Cybersecurity everywhere, and it is about time that the avenue enters the field of education.

The Miami Dade College (MDC) in the USA introduced a course in Cybersecurity in its College of Engineering and Technology (EnTech), which is scheduled to start in the Spring 2021 term. It is a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity course.

Cybersecurity has been identified as a necessity in both public and private sectors, and in all fields, be it healthcare, business, finance, manufacturing, energy, education, tourism and government. The advent of remote-learning has created a significant need for technology professionals in the industry.

“We wanted to create a program that is current with the times and gives students the best preparation for the current job market,” said Dr. Diego Tibaquirá, cybersecurity professor and Principal Investigator of the cybersecurity grants.

About the Cybersecurity course

The MDC Cybersecurity course involves much hands-on work which will be done at the ‘Cybersecurity Center of the Americas’ on the Wolfson Campus. This is a state-of-the-art facility equipped to provide a wholesome learning experience to all interested students.

The curriculum was created upon the guidelines of the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education framework, along with necessary guidelines from the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

MDC’s EnTech School also received grants worth more than $500,000 from the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation. “These grants complement MDC’s robust offerings in cybersecurity education by providing resources and support to students”, said Antonio Delgado, Dean of EnTech.

The college is planning to include summer training programs for local high school students interested in exploring the field of Cybersecurity, and public high school teachers.

The students who pursue this course are expected to fulfil roles like Security System Administrators, Information Security Analyst, Vulnerability Analyst, Cyber Security Incident Response Specialist, and Cyber Threat Intelligence Analyst with ease.
