Amanda, head of the Windows Insider program, announced plans to change the Windows Insider test channel through a Windows blog in mid-June. Microsoft says it will convert the current Build-based Ring model to a new channel channel model based on build quality and better support for parallel coding.
In addition to this change, Insiders will find similar product names and expectations in Windows and Office programs, as well as Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft says this change to the preview model is focused on quality of experience.
Now that the fast channel has become the Dev channel, the slow channel has become the beta channel, the Release Preview channel has become the Release Preview channel. The mapping looks like this,
IT professionals can use their typical Windows Update for Business or Windows Server Update Service management tools or manage beta and Preview Release Channel versions by using Azure Marketplace virtual machines (VMs).
Ideal for high-tech users. The internal testers in the Dev channel will get the earliest build in the development cycle and will contain the latest code for the engineer. These versions will have rough edges and some unstable features that may block critical activities or require workarounds.
These versions do not match the specific version of Windows 10. New features and operating system improvements in the channel will be available in future releases of Windows 10 and may be available as full operating system build updates or service versions. The internal feedback here will help engineers make major fixes and changes to the latest code.
Ideal for early adopters. In-testers and IT professionals in the Beta channel can view upcoming Windows 10 features while still getting relatively reliable updates that have been validated by Microsoft.
As part of the Beta channel, internal surveyors will see versions related to a specific upcoming release, such as the previous 20H1. Your feedback is especially important here because it will help engineers ensure that key issues are identified and resolved before major releases.
Release Preview Channel
Internal surveyors and IT professionals on the Release Preview release preview channel will have access to the upcoming version of Windows 10, which has advanced quality updates and some key features that can be released worldwide. These versions are supported by Microsoft.
Microsoft recommends that the company preview and validate the upcoming version of Windows 10 in the release preview channel, and then deploy it widely within the organisation.
