Indian government bans 59 Chinese apps including TikTok and ShareIt

The government of India had been considering the banning of 52 Chinese Apps since the past couple of weeks and the decision was made official yesterday when they banned 59 Apps from China. The list of these 59 apps includes highly popular Apps like UC Browser, ShareIt and TikTok.

This news has been announced by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). It is claimed that the decision is taken for those Apps which “are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, Defence of India, the security of state and public order.”

Among the banned apps, TikTok has been banned for the 2nd time in India due to controversies. Other Apps are BeautyPlus, Mi Video call, Shien, Parallel space, Xsender, and Cam scanner.

The list of 59 companies banned are released by the Ministry of Electronics and Information technology(MeiTY) which is also tweeted by Asian News International (ANI) on 29th June 2020. According to the press release by PIB, this move by the government id meant to “safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace.” 

The Ministry of Electronics and Information technology said that they have received various reports on the misuse of mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and transmitting the data of users to sources outside of India in an unauthorised manner.

These apps were red-flagged by Indian Intelligence agencies over privacy issues. This was backed by the National security council secretariat stating that some of these china linked apps are detrimental to the security of the country and its citizen.
