Volvo along with Waymo are developing their first self driven electric vehicle exclusively for the ride hailing purposes. This tie up was announced as a part of a new global partnership. Waymo is a Unit of Alphabet and is Google’s self driving car project which was started in 2009. The mission of Waymo is to make it safe and easy for the people and things to get where they are going. This project with Volvo does exactly the same. It will enable the Volvo cars to operate safely without a driver.

The companies have said that Waymo will be working with Volvo’s Global brands like Lynk& Co and Polestar. Vovo will be dealing with the manufacturing of the vehicles while Waymo will work on the Artificial Intelligence (AI) side and also design the radar, camera and Lidar for the EV.

The two companies have not announce the date or place for launching the vehicle. Volvo has a separate agreement with Uber Technologies – the ride hailing company which operates in all major cities in the world. They are making Uber equipped enough to operate as self driven vehicles.

Uber had taken a break from the same after the tragic incident in which one of their self driven vehicles killed a pedestrian in the city of Arizona in 2018. Uber has been facing loss in revenue due to the pandemic and thus trying to cut off costs. Dara Kosrowshahi the Chief Executive said that they are ready to use new technologies in the vehicles which will help them reduce expenditure.

The Waymo-Volvo deal will allow Waymo to return to their previous goal of improving how driverless cars will look from which they deviated after 2017. After the Firefly self driving car in 2017, they retrofitted their components to conventional vehicles like Chrysler Pacifica Minivans. They are also developing the same technology in commercial trucks.

Waymo will continue the earlier alliance with, Jaguar Land Rover, Fiat Crysler and Renault Nissan Mitsubishi. Last year, Rival Cruise had released the prototype for their first self driving electric vehicle called cruise origin.
