Qualcomm discloses specs of Snapdragon 865 and 765 SoCs

In the second day of Qualcomm’s fourth Annual Snapdragon Summit, the company briefly discussed the new Snapdragon 865 and 765 SoCs which were announced yesterday.

This year, Qualcomm has chosen to launch not one but two SoC platforms and that also at the same time. Snapdragon 865 is the direct successor of Snapdragon 855. On the other hand, Snapdragon 765 and 765G SoCs are new family members.

The new generation adds a couple of new features but delivers a lower performance level so they are affordably priced.

Previously, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC was powered by a  Kryo 485 Gold (A76 derivative) processor clocked at 2.84 GHz, 3 Kryo 485 Gold (A76 derivative) processors clocked at 2.42 GHz and 4 Kryo 485 Silver (A55 derivative) processors clocked at 1.80 GHz.

Now, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC is powered by a 1 Cortex A77 processor clocked at 2.84 GHz, 3 Cortex A77 processors clocked at 2.42 GHz and 4 Cortex A55 processors clocked at 1.80 GHz.

As far as GPU is concerned, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC was powered by an Adreno 640 @ 585 MHz while Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC is powered by an Adreno 650 chip which delivers 25% better performance, 50% better ALUs and 50% better pixel clocking.

Snapdragon 855 came with a Dual 14-bit Spectra 380 ISP that supported one 48 MP camera or two 22 MP cameras while Snapdragon 865 comes with a dual 14-bit Spectra 480 ISP that supports one 64 MP with ZSL or two 25 MP cameras with ZSL along with 4K video support.

One aspect of the new Snapdragon SoCs that overshadows all other new characteristics is that the company designed it without an integrated modem. It is a practical implementation that stemmed from the complexity of 5G and the platform. However, Qualcomm explained that in the future, they will re-integrate the modem back into the SoCs.
