Larry Page, the co-founder of Google is stepping down from the position of CEO in Alphabet. Sundar Pichai will be taking over the role of CEO of Alphabet along with his existing responsibilities and CEO of Google. The co-founder, Sergy Brin is also resigning the post of President in Alphabet and the post will be eliminated.
Both of them had posted in their blogs, “It is the natural time to simplify our management structure.” Page had become the CEO of Alphabet in 2015 after Google restructured to form the parent company. Larry Page was the CEO of Google at the time and was succeeded by Sundar Pichai after he stepped down from Google to take the position of CEO in Alphabet.
The two will remain as employees in Alphabet and continue being the board members of this company. Alphabet was formed in 2015 to oversee Google’s other Bets which are not part of its core business.
Page and Brin wrote in their page, “With Alphabet now well established, and Google and the Other Bets operating effectively as independent companies, it is the natural time to simplify our management structure. We have never been the ones to hold on to our management roles when we think there is a better way to run the company. And Alphabet and Google do not need 2 CEOs and a President to run the company. Going forward, Sundar will be the new CEO for both Alphabet and Google”.
“He will be the executive responsible and accountable for leading Google and managing Alphabet’s investments in our portfolio of other bets. We are deeply committed to Google and Alphabet for the long term and will remain actively involved as board members, shareholders, and co-founders. In addition, we plan to continue talking with Sundar regularly especially on topics we are passionate about.” they added.
It was informed in the mail to the employees that this change will not affect the day to day activities in Google or Alphabet. Pichai also wrote that “ I’m excited about Alphabet and it’s long term focus on tackling big challenges through technology.”
Page and Brin have never been in the limelight for quite a long time and thus, it will not be surprising for many in the field that they are stepping down from their roles. Creation of Alphabet itself provided a chance for two of them to fade from the limelight and let Sundar Pichai take the leads.
Pichai has helped Google to grow larger than a day to day online platform. He has overseen the company’s immense investments in artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies and also the launch of the Pixel brand.
Page and Brin had handed over the CEO position to Sundar Pichai at a time when Google was facing controversies along with its video partner Youtube. There were lots of employee issues arising afterward and during all the controversies Pichai had become the face of Google while representing the company. They still have to deal with lawsuits over-firing of employees who organized protests for issues related to sexual harassment and labor activism.
It is presently unclear about how involved the 2 founders will be in Google’s activities, or how Google’s management would deal will all the pressing issues. Both of them have a combined wealth of more than 100 billion and has not made any announcements of any philanthropic activities. Therefore it is also unclear what the 2 co-founders will do with their immense wealth.
