Huawei Technologies have come up with a with the successor of Kirin 980 SoC named, Kirin 990. The new Kirin 990 SoC is announced by Richard Yu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Huawei in Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin. IFA is one of the biggest technologies shows in Europe.
Huawei has been announcing its next-generation SoC in IFA from three years. The Kirin 990 processor is going to be used in every product of Huawei and Honor from next year. The processor is going to have an inbuilt 5G modem which is a new addition to Huawei processors. Huawei entitles it to be the most powerful processor in the market.
A dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) has been incorporated in Kirin 990 that is able to do advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) computation. For high gaming performance, it is also incorporated with Mali-G76 GPU.
Kirin 990 comes with a modified CPU architecture comprising of two Cortex-A76 high-performance cores, two Cortex-A76 “middle-cores” that improves its work and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores for lighter tasks. The clock speed of high-performance cores, middle cores and efficiency core is 2.86 GHz, 2.36 GHz and 1.95 GHz respectively. The chipset comprises of 7nm manufacturing process and around 10.3 billion transistors which make it the world’s first mobile SoC to have so many transistors.
When compared to the Snapdragon 855, Huawei claims that the Kirin 990 5G offers 10 percent and 9 percent single-core and multi-core performance advantage, respectively.
Kirin 990 5G single-core and multicore performance provides an advantage of 10% and 9% respectively in comparison to Snapdragon 855. The download and upload speed of the 5G modem is 2.3Gbps and 1.25Gbps respectively. Meantime, Snapdragon is working on Qualcomm 5G Chip list includes high-end as well as mid-range smartphones.
Mate 30 series which is about to launch in September will be powered by Kirin 990. The company claims to provide Kirin 990 5G or non 5G processors for Mate 30 series.
A 4G variant is also available in the Kirin 990 family. The download speed of the 4G modem is 1.6 Gbps. There are more chances of Kirin 4G variant to be used in the devices until 5G is employed in the majority part of the world.
